Our Story

North Central began in November 1942, when local farmer Phillip Altheim gathered eight men at his farm southwest of Stony Plain with a simple but powerful idea: by pooling their money and equipment during the hardships of wartime, they could build a community meat house to serve local families. Each contributed $10, and that winter they cut logs and got started on constructed a two-storey building.

As North Central Co-op grew, members expanded operations and officially registered with the Province in 1946, the year we recognize as our founding date. What started as a modest 24-by-24-foot log meat locker and have expanded into the thriving, member-owned organization we know today.

Eighty years later, we honour the founding families and early members whose cooperative spirit laid the foundation for generations of success. Their belief in community and working together continues to guide North Central Co-op as we proudly serve our members today and into the future.
