Grain Drying with Propane

With the uncertainty of Mother Nature, many of today’s producers are making the business-savvy decision to use propane grain dryers for a more flexible harvest. Brent Cohoe, West Manitoba Propane Area Manager for Federated Co-operatives Limited, agrees that incorporating propane into a farm operation can reap timely benefits: “Depending on the time of year, grain-drying equipment can eliminate several days of in-field drying and condition the grain more quickly and effectively than traditional aeration. It lets farmers go earlier in the morning and later in the day and lets them start harvesting a little bit earlier in the season.”

Grain drying has become a more popular practice, as it reduces field losses since farmers can harvest earlier. A dryer in the system may also make it feasible to straight-combine other crops. When tough or damp grain is harvested and not dried, long-term storage frequently results in grain spoilage. Proper drying and aeration in storage can reduce or eliminate spoilage caused by hot spots and insect infestations. For large-sized crops where grain needs to be dried, fuel efficiency becomes an important factor.
